Yesterday, Sega announced that Yakuza: Like a Dragon would be releasing on March 2nd 2021 for PS5. It also confirmed that PS4 players, who could jump in this November, will receive a free upgrade for the PS5 version. There’s just one problem: You won’t be able to transfer save data between the two versions.
Ryu ga Gotoku Studio confirmed on Twitter that while both digital and physical owners of the PS4 version could avail of the free upgrade when it became available, “Save data will not be transferable between the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.” This could be a problem for those who clear the game on PS4 and want to attempt a New Game Plus playthrough on PS5. Then again, a Western release for New Game Plus (which is paid DLC) has yet to be confirmed.
On the bright side, Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s current-gen releases have had their release dates moved up. The Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions will now launch on November 10th along with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
To clarify, physical owners of Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PS4 can also use the original disc to upgrade to the PS5 version when it releases on March 2, 2021.
Save data will not be transferable between the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.
