Owing to the fact that Hitman 3, unlike its predecessor, is going to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC, many had been wondering how carrying over levels from Hitman 2 into the upcoming sequel would work for those who had purchased the second game via Steam. Recently, IO Interactive cleared up some of the confusion, stating that all Hitman 3 players would get the first game’s GOTY Edition for free, but that Hitman 2 would have to be re-purchased (albeit at heavily discounted prices).
The announcement understandably drew plenty of criticism, but IO Interactive seems to have taken that into account. Taking recently to Twitter, the developer assured PC players that importing locations from Hitman 1 and 2 into Hitman 3 will be done at no additional cost, and that players won’t need to repurchase any older title after all. “We guarantee that players will NOT need to repurchase the games,” the developer writes.
How that will be handled hasn’t been detailed yet, with IO Interactive stating that the rollout for the same will be done “in the coming weeks.” In the meantime, however, the Hitman 1 GOTY Access Pass will be free for all those who pre-order Hitman 3 or buy it within the first ten days of launch, as previously announced.
Additionally, IO Interactive reiterated that carrying over progression from Hitman 2 to Hitman 3 can still be done right off the bat when the game launches, and that there has been no change to that process.
Hitman 3 is out on January 20 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and as a cloud-exclusive release on Nintendo Switch.
